HOLLY DIDN’T THINK she had been gone that long. She arrived home to a note stuck on her door.

You’re welcome. Left the key on the table.

How did Francis work that fast: do errands and return here. She walked through the door, suspicious, and looked around. He had been purposefully vague about his plans and that gave Holly cause to worry. There was a new green plant on the table.

She noticed the neon Post-it notes right away. One on the fridge. One on the cupboard. She turned. Two on the door.

Dead bolt. Actually needs to be used in order to work.

Checked for bugs. None that I could find.

The one on the fridge, which was actually three because he was so prolific it made Holly want to laugh and be mad at him.

Fridge stocked with veggies and fruit. Eat when craving a snack. Peppers offer a satisfying crunch. Apples too. Pitcher of a kale smoothie. Drink right away.

The one on the cupboards: Don’t be too mad. The fluff is gone. Stocked with whole wheat and chickpea pasta, healthy snacks. Replaced everything with sugar-free options.

The one on the table: These are an incredible help. Have to do them to feel the benefits.

There were several YouTube links to beginning yoga instructors.

Holly pulled a bag of carrots out of the fridge. She sat at the table and tried to experience that satisfying crunch. She wasn’t mad at all. He had gone out of his way to do what a friend wouldn’t do. He did what Trent might have done in all this: provide more immediate protection.

Her phone pinged. It was from Millicent.
